“I think it’s really important to design things with a kind of personality.” - Marc Newson.Marc Newson has been described as one of the most influential designers of his generation. Born 1963 in Sydney, Newson is an industrial designer who works in aircraft cabin design, product design, furniture design, jewellery, and clothing. Newson studied jewellery and sculpture at the Sydney College of the Arts, graduating in 1986. With the aid of an Australian Crafts Council grant, he staged his first solo exhibition at the age of 23. By the age of 25, Newson had created the Lockheed Lounge, a riveted aluminium chaise longue that has arguably become one of the most iconic contemporary design works. He then moved to Tokyo, working with designer company Idée, creating works such as the Super Guppy lamp (1987) and the Orgone lounge (1989). In 1991 Newson moved to Paris, where he set up a studio and co-founded the Ikepod watch company. He finally settled in London in 1997, where he and his business partner Benjamin de Haan set up Marc Newson Ltd. As well as overseeing his own company, he has held senior positions at clients’ companies, having been Creative Director of Qantas Airways from 2005 to 2015 and Designer for Special Projects at Apple since his first involvement in the design of the ‘Apple Watch’ (2014). His design pieces remain highly sought after on the secondary market, with the coveted Lockheed Lounge setting four world record prices at auction for work created by a living designer.Newson is the only industrial designer represented by the Gagosian Gallery and, alongside Frank Gehry, forms the gallery’s ‘Masters of Design.’ Leading museums around the world have hosted solo retrospective exhibitions of his work, and his pieces are included in countless permanent collections, including The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Design Museum (London), V&A Museum (London), Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou (Paris), and Musée des Arts Décoratifs (Paris).Marc Newson has been included in TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People and has received numerous awards and distinctions. In 2012, he was awarded CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.He counts Jonathan Ive of Apple Inc. as one of his best friends. In a 2012 article in The New York Times, Ive described Newson's work.“I think Marc is fairly peerless now. Marc's forms are often imitated, but what other designers seldom imitate is his preoccupation with materials and processes. You have to start with an understanding of the material. Often your innovation is just coming up with a new way to use material.”
