  • “Good design is innovative. Good design must be useful. Good design is aesthetic design. Good design makes a product understandable. Good design is honest. Good design is unobtrusive. Good design is long-lasting. Good design is consistent in every detail. Good design is environmentally friendly. And last but not least, good design is as little design as possible.” - Dieter Rams.Dieter Rams was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, in 1932. An industrial designer and retired academic, Rams developed the ten principles of good design, sometimes known as ten commandments, which have secured worldwide recognition and appreciation. Rams attended Wiesbaden School of Art, graduating in architecture with honours in 1953. In 1955, he was recruited to Braun as an architect and an interior designer. In 1961, he became the chief design officer at Braun, a position he retained until 1995. Rams and his staff designed many memorable products for Braun, including the famous SK4 record player and the high-quality 'D'-series (D45, D46) of 35mm film slide projectors. The SK4, known as the "Snow White coffin," is considered revolutionary because it transitioned household appliance design away from looking like traditional furniture. By producing electronic gadgets that were remarkable in their austere aesthetic and user-friendliness, Rams made Braun a household name in the 1950s.Rams was influenced by his grandfather, a carpenter,  and the Bauhaus movement, which brought art and industry together and suggested good design was about achieving beauty and utility. In doing so, it could transcend its origins and influence society on a broader scale. He introduced these sensibilities to consumer products, explaining that “Indifference towards people and the reality in which they live is actually the one and only cardinal sin in design.”Almost every industrial designer since has been influenced by his work. His designs inspired Appledesigner Jonathan Ive, including Apple's iOS 6 calculator, a clear reference to the 1977 Braun ET66 calculator. The designer responsible for the iPhone, iPod, and iPad has described Rams’ work as “Bold, pure, perfectly proportioned, coherent and effortless. At a glance, you knew exactly what it was and exactly how to use it.”
