Thomas Gouws is an abstract artist living on the Mornington Peninsula near Melbourne. Originally from South Africa, he worked as an architect for more than 20 years before immigrating to Australia in 2018 with his wife and young daughters.
His minimalistic mixed media artworks are explorations of geometric abstraction and draw inspiration from his architectural background. His practice examines the layers where the disciplines of Art & Architecture converge and embodies a language of pure, clean geometries combined with coarse, rugged textures and tonal colour schemes.
His process is largely intuitive and involves layering form, colour and texture to reveal a new inter-connectedness of parts. His experimental approach explores a variety of mediums and materials including painted timber collage. His mostly muted colour palettes are inspired by nature and blend the concepts of landscape, time, memory, and connection.
