“Good design is good business.” - Florence Knoll.

Florence Knoll’s life story is one of intrigue and empowerment. She grew up in Saginaw, Michigan, before being orphaned at 12 years old when both parents died early; it was by fate and chance that a foster guardian enrolled her at Kingswood School—a boarding school for girls that was part of the Cranbrook Educational Community - the legendary art, education, and museum campus whose chief architect, the world-renowned Finnish designer Eliel Saarinen, was also a teacher and president.

Noting her talents and interest in the campus buildings, Saarinen and his wife, Loja, a textile designer, took Knoll under their wing. She also grew close to their son, Eero, who was seven years her senior, and frequently spent summers in Finland with the family. Knoll was 14 years old when she designed her first concept for a house, demonstrating an early aptitude in architecture. She studied architecture at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago (IIT), and spent a few years at London’s Architectural Association

She teamed up with furniture designer Hans Knoll, eventually encouraging him to expand into interior design. The couple founded Knoll Associates, and “With Florence’s design skills and Hans’ business acumen and salesmanship, the pair, who married in 1946, grew the nascent company into an international arbiter of style and design,” according to the Knoll website.

Florence Knoll revolutionised the world of post-war office interiors.

In 1964, a profile in the New York Times declared: “That revolution in the office took place 20 years ago, and Florence Schust (Schu) Knoll, the woman who led it, is today the single most powerful figure in the field of modern design.” Knoll “promoted the Modernist merger of architecture, art and utility in her furnishings and interiors,” remembers the Times, adding “especially — although not exclusively — for offices.”

Florence Knoll humbly referred to her furniture designs as “meat and potatoes” — filler between the standout pieces of Bertoia, Mies, and Saarinen. Sixty-five years later, her furniture is anything but filler. Her attention to detail, eye for proportion, and command of the modern aesthetic resulted in some of the most celebrated furniture of the modern era.
